ABSTRACT

Events are a microcosm of real life. People gather, interact, eat, consume and create. If all goes well, they engage, give something of themselves and learn from the experience. This chapter is aimed at students and researchers in event studies as well as organisers who are keen to explore how events can promote sustainability. In it, I suggest you think of events as opportunities to showcase society as you would like it to be. In this way you can not only stimulate people intellectually, but also allow them to experience an alternative to current practices. If you do it right, your attendees will leave feeling inspired, even transformed. So here is my core message – if you want to promote sustainability, make your event a peek into a sustainable way of life, which will excite and inspire people to re-make the experience in their everyday lives.
