ABSTRACT

The objective of this chapter is to inform the reader about one side of the ‘old’ versus ‘new terrorism’ debate, namely, the thesis that favors the existence of a ‘new terrorism.’ To accomplish this, we will begin by setting some parameters that can help refine what is meant by these two words, namely, ‘new’ and ‘terrorism.’ The chapter will then revisit the broader and more prevalent observations that have been put forth by the proponents of the new terrorism thesis. Following this review, the chapter will offer a brief overview of the counterarguments in the debate. It will conclude with a few additional insights related to change and context that might help understand why certain aspects of contemporary terrorism can be cautiously labeled as new.
