ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on therapeutic work in a special residential school and further education college for students from seven to twenty-two years of age. All students have profound physical disabilities. Some disabilities are genetic in origin, some result from trauma at birth, some have been acquired at a later stage. Often students have severely reduced life expectancy with some disorders causing gradual physical andor intellectual deterioration. Intellectual range is wide, however – from severe learning difficulty to university entrance. Many have impaired speech, sight or hearing and the means by which they communicate is varied and may include augmented communication.
