Learning through action: reflections on action research in natural resource management

ByROBERT FISHER

The aims of this chapter are to present a personal reflection on a variety of experiences involving action research (AR) and adaptive collaborative management dating back to the 1980s and to highlight some of the challenges involved in practising action research. The experiences covered include an early period working in a community forestry project in Nepal, participation as supervisor of several action research oriented Ph.D. studies, and training and mentoring action research/ACM (adaptive collaborative management) teams in a number of field-based projects concerned broadly with natural resource management and development.
