ABSTRACT

The concept of resilience is a much-heralded one in the mental-health literature, with the promise of an enduring happy and successful life for those who practice the behaviors and thoughts that contribute to being resilient. A number of school-based programs purport to develop resiliency in children and adolescents. Also, there are several measures of related constructs that support those programs. However promising, programs developed to enhance resilience in youth may not be as successful in developing resilience and resulting in related positive outcomes as they purport to be. It is the purpose of this chapter to look at resilience in educational settings and; how it relates to CBT; highlight constructs associated with resilience, as well as various measures relating to resilience; and critically evaluate programs with some evidence base, as well as list ones that are simply described.
