ABSTRACT

Recently, the symbol for Dutch exports has not been the kaasmeisje (the cheese girl) but Rotterdam lingerie designer Marlies Dekkers. Her creations were seen at the Inno Design Tech Expo/Business Design Week 2008 in Hong Kong, together with those of the national hobbyhorses, designer Marcel Wanders and architect Winy Maas. 1 Meanwhile, Dutch design is also leading the way internationally in the field of fashion, industrial design and architecture. 2 The Knotted Chair by Marcel Wanders, the haute couture of Viktor & Rolf and the Rem Koolhaas designed library in Seattle are all examples of innovative Dutch Design. But other exponents of Dutch culture have also attracted international attention. The modern ballet of the Nederlands Danstheater; literature by Cees Nooteboom, Arnon Grunberg and Margriet de Moor; John de Mol's television series Big Brother, as well as the performances for tens of thousands by DJ Tiësto and André Rieu, are just a few examples of successful Dutch high and low culture abroad.
