Design and technology teachers are very aware of the key role of analysis and evaluation in the design process. Pupils of the subject are constantly reminded of how the development of artifacts relies on good critical examination, to highlight the positives and remove the weaknesses. This examination is carried out by the designer but also relies heavily upon testing and the views and opinions of others. It is only by taking into account possible alternatives and improvements suggested, arising from this process, that products develop. For designers to continue with the development of a product, constructive criticism is essential. Assessment in design and technology provides the analysis and evaluation upon which the designer relies.
