Annex: The Statistical Measurement of Urban and Rural Residence in the UK and US

ByTONY CHAMPION, DAVID L. BROWN

The UK uses a variety of approaches to defi ne ‘rural’. This is partly because there is variation between the four countries of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland in how rural areas are offi cially defi ned for statistical reporting purposes. It is also because of the use of different approaches for different applications, with this being infl uenced not just by the purpose of the analysis but also by data availability.
