ABSTRACT
The six countries of the Mesoamerican isthmus share historic and economic experiences that similarly affected their political systems. Despite unique traits, their economies and polities fit within the world economy in similar ways. Common domestic economic and external pressures acted upon them after 1960 to establish five new democracies in a region where before only one had developed that form of government.
