ABSTRACT

Journalism research in Germany is celebrating its centenary. In 1910, sociologist Max Weber presented a complete research program at the first German Convention of Sociology on the situation of the media in general and of journalism in particular. This research program was elaborate and comprehensive with respect to the relevant research topics in this field and therefore it is still worthy of discussion today. It included questions of power relations between journalists and their sources, institutional influences on journalists’ work, journalistic professionalization, the quality of journalistic coverage, relevant characteristics of journalists, and even media effects.
