ABSTRACT

“We are like the animal trainer in the circus, who tries to keep eight hungry tigers in check with his whip. And then suddenly the light goes out.” This is how chairman Arendo Joustra described the state of journalism in the Netherlands at the 50th anniversary of the Dutch Society of Editors in 2009. “From all sides the threats come to us. We call them—very tough—opportunities and challenges, but we know that nowhere in the world has the solution yet been found.”
