Columbia Primary School

WithAnne Sofer

The ward in which the school is located is called Weavers, recalling an even earlier group of settlers, the Huguenot refugees who set up their looms here in the eighteenth century. The 1991 census provides a profile of this ward which seemed little changed at the time I wrote this: 7.8 per cent of adults had a higher education qualification, compared to 13.5 per cent nationally (for the UK); 11.6 per cent of children were in ‘high social class households’ (31 per cent nationally); 67.8 per cent of children were from ethnic minorities (10.1 per cent nationally); 61 per cent children lived in overcrowded households (10.5 per cent nationally).
