Lochgelly North Special School

WithJohn MacBeath, Donald Gray

It is now five years since we last visited Lochgelly North School in Fife. It was recommended to us by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate who had described it at that time as ‘a very special school’. It sought and gained success against the odds, not simply of economic deprivation but of personal disabilities which denied opportunities for mainstream education or an independent way of life. Its definition of success was not in terms of national standards or predetermined attainment targets but the enrichment it could bring to the lives of the 18 individuals who made up its pupil body.
