Hazelwood College is religiously integrated, co-educational and comprehensive. All three characteristics mean that it is unlike most schools in Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland retains a selective system of grammar and secondary schools, although the future of this system is to be reviewed by the Northern Ireland Assembly. Following the 1989 Education Reform Order there has been a marked increase in the number of religiously integrated schools, but they still account for less than five per cent of the total enrolment of pupils. Among post-primary schools, the integrated sector accounts for 13 schools out of a total of 165 secondary and 73 grammar schools.
