ABSTRACT

Chinese education spans thousands of years of using Confucian beliefs and tenets to organise its educational processes and programmes. Based on honour, respect and relationships, this tradition requires a high level of esteem for teachers and the school, and the pursuit of educational excellence. Even today, ancient Chinese stories and poems form a basis of shared beliefs related to language, literature and civics and underscore the educational system in Taiwan. On the other hand, mathematics, with the exception of the training on the abacus, uses Western content, curriculum sequence and presentation. Taiwan is a culture which increasingly represents a blend of different influences, both historical and contemporary.
