ABSTRACT
Malaysian trade unions operate in a political and economic environment in which ethnicity fuelled by ethno-economic divisions has dominated Malaysian political discourse. The economic development process that occurred rapidly over the past three decades focused on improving the position of the Malays whose socio-economic status was substantially less than that of the Chinese. Industrial development aimed to, and succeeded in, providing Malay waged work and business opportunities.
