ABSTRACT

The education of geography teachers into values education through both developments in their own subject and other influences has been a very significant part of the history of geography teaching since the 1970s. There were important books which helped us on our way. When taking an MA seminar or developing an in-service workshop today, I would use Graham Haydon’s Teaching About Values: a New Approach (1997). His analysis of teachers as transmitters and as educators provides another defence against accusations of indoctrination, as well as bringing together the two ideas of (1) thinking with content to reach knowledge and understanding and (2) thinking with others to understand values through dialogue and discussion.
