ABSTRACT

The primary aim of this chapter is to summarise the models of care for drug-using pregnant women under development in the UK. It is useful, however, to set these in a wider context. There are many aspects of them that have their roots in developments that have been occurring at an international level over the past decade. The global concordance in the principles that should inform policy and practice is impressive. It is also heartening, since the opportunities for productive exchange of information should be high. The key elements in the search for appropriate and humane services in the US, Australia and Europe are described before going on to describe in more detail the paths that have been taken in the UK to translate these principles into practice.
