ABSTRACT

What do football stadiums, baseball stadiums, convention centers, and mixed-use commercial projects have to do with the relationship between ports and cities? On the waterfronts of many American cities these have quite a bit to do with each other. This comes from the changing nature of the waterfront, changes in the role of port authorities, and the redevelopment attitudes of many American cities. This chapter deals with the changing nature of the relationship between the port and the city in the American context by exploring two port cities: Boston and San Francisco.
