ABSTRACT
In common with most other health-related behaviours, cigarette smoking varies markedly by sociodemographic characteristics, in particular socioeconomic status. However, the pattern of socioeconomic inequalities in smoking is itself variable, according to the stage of the smoking epidemic in a particular country.
