ABSTRACT

France is among those European countries where the differences in premature mortality, at least among men, are the highest (1), although the French healthcare system has been rated among those providing a high quality of care, as in a recent WHO report (2). In this context, it is not surprising that a sharp contrast exists between statistical data on socioeconomic inequalities in health and their perception by the population, the policy-makers and the health professionals.
