ABSTRACT

Alcohol presence in casualties of all types has been the subject of scientific investigation for nearly a century. In 1976, the then Social Research Group at Berkeley undertook a large-scale review of the literature of alcohol involvement in casualties and crime for the US National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (Aarens et al. 1977). The purpose of undertaking a comprehensive review was not only to identify the literature but, more important, to begin to develop a conceptual framework within which to understand alcohol’s role in the events which lead to injury and death.
