ABSTRACT
The following accounts of how two very young girls were identified as suffering from severe hearing loss were compiled from material in the case-files of an educational centre for pre-school hearing-impaired children. They record the ‘official’ perspective of the professionals involved in the lives of these two girls, and the administrative procedures that resulted in them both being placed in a residential school for the deaf at the age of five.
