ABSTRACT

Kenny and Babs Wilson live at number 13 Fortescue Avenue, a street of Victorian terraced houses amid the high-rise flats and demolition areas of London’s East End. There still exists in their area a kind of family community; Kenny’s sister lives at number 27, his mother at number 9, his aunt at number 3. Kenny and his brother are London taxi drivers, and Babs worked in the cutting section of a clothing factory before her children were born. They had two daughters, followed by a son, Andrew. The following description of Andrew and his family is adapted from a much longer account written by Tom Wakefield, the head of the special school that Andrew attended.
