ABSTRACT
Janet sees her job as ‘increasing and strengthening the links between the children and their community and between the school and the parents of the children’. The community in which she operates is defined officially as ‘the school and the area from which the children come’. At times this definition may lead to a conflict of interests. The school’s catchment area is large, and Janet’s attempts to involve the children and their families in the school may actually be at the expense of greater involvement in facilities in their own areas.
