ABSTRACT
In her book Children Living in Long-stay Hospitals, Maureen Oswin describes the lives of some of the severely handicapped children living in Ward 7. The following extract includes a detailed description of only one of the children, Tom, but the sections describing a typical afternoon and evening in the ward convey a vivid impression of the kind of lives led by most of the children there.
