ABSTRACT
We live in a culture which is suffused with familial values (Barrett and McIntosh 1982) and where the language of alternatives is feeble and etiolated. Yet, of course, large numbers of people live in unconventional families or in no families at all. Alternatives exist. The real problem lies not in discovering them, but in evaluating and validating them.
