ABSTRACT
The role of the dog in Nigerian culture is considerable when compared with its European counterpart (cf. Krappe 1964, p. 252). Explaining the poverty of dog lore in European culture, Krappe says it is ‘because the animal has been man’s constant and familiar friend for thousands of years’. But this is precisely the reason why the role of the dog in Nigerian folklore is so considerable.
