ABSTRACT

The general topic of this volume, the human-animal relation, returns us to the complex of ideas that provided modern anthropology with its distinctive subject matter more than a century ago under the label of ‘totemism’. This approach provides a context, at once sociological and historical, within which to situate Signifying animals, and it merits further consideration before account can properly be taken of particular contributions.
