ABSTRACT

I’ve been institutionalised all my life, in orphanages, in the army, in government. What many institutions do is shame people. Take for example the company I work for part-time. They want to employ Aboriginal youth on a part-time basis, and when their services are no longer needed, they are dismissed. That’s hiring cheap labour, not honouring the person. The money is the driver. People speak about the fact that we’re going to give these poor kids an opportunity to work for six months. They are not. They are doing the same thing that society has done for ever – marginalising, hurting them. That’s what they are doing but they can’t see that. They can’t see beyond. Why are they so slow to see that? I am not sure whether they want to see it.
