ABSTRACT

This chapter arises from our involvement in the European Women’s Health Project (EWHP) in 1996. The EWHP was a European Commission (EC)1

funded project, directed by a researcher based at the University of Limerick, Ireland.2 A key feature of the project was the production of national reports on women’s health by “Coordinators” based in each of the fifteen European Union (EU) Member States. In fact, there were two Coordinators in the United Kingdom because Northern Ireland was reported on separately. One of the authors, Carol Thomas, was the UK (England, Wales, Scotland) Member State Coordinator, with research support provided by Jan Rigby.
