ABSTRACT

Details of teaching and support staff should be recorded, indicating their roles and responsibilities as well as their particular strengths and areas of expertise. Agreed job descriptions provide a valuable aid in many ways. Often these are regarded as a ‘straitjacket’ of responsibilities but, used effectively, they can provide a useful guide to professional development and can allow much more accurate and authoritative references on staff to be written. They should not be seen as fixed descriptions and a review at least annually is valuable if they are to aid professional involvement and development of the staff.
