The existing appraisal scheme At present there is a statutory obligation to carry out appraisal, on a two-year repeating cycle, of every teacher employed in maintained schools, other than those teachers working less than 40 per cent of full time. However, in some schools all part-time teachers have opted to be involved in the appraisal process. The purpose of appraisal is to assist school teachers in their professional development and career planning, and to promote the quality of education by enabling teachers to carry out their duties more effectively.
