ABSTRACT

A child's education helps provide a framework for lifelong learning, the interpretation of everyday experiences and an environment in which a child's self-image can develop alongside the skills required for forming relationships. These are crucial elements of education that can sometimes be overshadowed by the more academic aims of schooling. Formal education provides a structure to a child's life, complementing that which is provided by the family. It also has a therapeutic role when aspects of the child's life are dysfunctional and when the child is emotionally or psychologically disturbed.
