H hairdressing The adage that a woman's hair is her crowning glory is apt for black women. Traditionally, the way a woman wore her hair in Africa was a mark of social and marital status, age and identity. The condition of one's hair for people of African origin is associated with the politics of race. Lightcoloured skin equates to straight hair, dark skin to tight curls or 'nappy' hair, as the phrase is known.
