The publisher of Emma, John Murray, who was also proprietor of the Quarterly Review, invited Scott to review the novel (in a letter dated 25 December 1815). This is the first major critical notice of Jane Austen (see Introduction, pp. 13–14). For other of Scott’s views on Jane Austen, see No. 17.
