A letter from Maria Edgeworth, the novelist, to ‘the author of Waverley,’ 23 October 1814.
Upon receiving a presentation copy ‘from the author’, she sent this letter to James Ballantyne, Scott’s literary agent. It carried the motto, ‘Aut Scotus, aut Diabolus’, either Scott or the Devil.
