ABSTRACT

John Scott (1783–1821), who was the first editor of the London Magazine, died in a duel with Jonathan Christie, a friend of the influential J.G.Lockhart (see No. 27). There had been a fierce running quarrel with Lockhart over the criticism contained in Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine. In London literary circles, Scott was thought of very highly, especially after the flying start that he gave to the London Magazine.
