ABSTRACT
Towards the end of the last century there was a marked increase in the number of male characters appearing in female guise in English and American fiction. This occurred at all levels of taste and readership, from a popular novel such as A Florida Enchantment (1891b),1 to erotica such as Gynecocracy (1893).
