CROSS-DRESSING, SEX-CHANGING AND THE PRESS*
This chapter contains an analysis of a sample from my ongoing collection of newspaper and magazine cuttings. This began in the late 1970s and initially material came simply from the press consumption of myself and friends. Over time this has been supplemented from other sources; subcultural publications which often reproduce press reports; Archive News published by the Trans-Gender Archive; the private collections of individuals encountered in the course of my research; the Gay Monitoring and Archive Project. The publication of extracts from the press cuttings collected by George Ives (Sieveking, 1981) provided a small amount of material covering the years 1904-43. Some material from the 1950s and 1960s, particularly relating to the famous cases of this period, was gathered during searches at the British Newspaper Library.
