ABSTRACT
A gulf exists between modern children and the medieval past that is presented to them as their heritage. With regard to our view of past cultures in general, the attitude to the medieval at first glance seems paradoxical. Whereas ancient peoples, non-western cultures and even our own immediate ancestors are often seen as different from us, medieval people are commonly held to be similar.
