ABSTRACT

Multicultural education is a philosophy for formal schooling which has been promoted among educators for nearly two decades. The old assimilation policy, the 'Melting-Pot', still an aim of American schools, came under attack as the political and social consciousness of the relatively powerless minorities was raised during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s; an alternative, multicultural education was demanded, one which reflected and responded to the cultural diversity of the United States.
