ABSTRACT

Empirical studies concerning the dynamics of worker flows in the French labour market have been conducted essentially through the use of the Labour Force Surveys collected annually by INSEE (Institut National de la Statistique et des Etudes Economiques, Paris). The principal aim of these surveys is to estimate the rates of employment, unemployment and non-participation in the labour force every year in March. For this purpose, INSEE conducts the survey over a sample of households randomly chosen on the basis of the results of the overall population census. The sampling rate is 1/300 and one-third of the sample is renewed every year: this scheme implies that one third of the surveyed households is present in the sample for three consecutive years.
