ABSTRACT
In 1994 some US fundamentalist ministers decided to ‘out’ two muchloved characters from the PBS children’s TV show Sesame St. ‘Bert and Ernie are quite obviously gay lovers,’ they declared. ‘They cook and tend plants together and even share a bedroom.’ By way of clinching the argument they added, ‘Sometimes they even do a bit of sewing.’1
