ABSTRACT

Accreditation of Indian higher technical education is to be entrusted to a statutory National Board of Accreditation. This Board’s organizational structure, criteria of accreditation and procedures are described. Its mandatory quality assurance system will be separate from ‘recognition’, ‘approval’ and the award of degrees. Accreditation in the general higher education sector will be voluntary, but institutions will be expected to comply. It will be undertaken by an Assessment and Accreditation Council, a new independent body to be established by the University Grants Commission.
