ABSTRACT

Chapter 11 offered an overview of institutional and specialized accreditation in the United States. Here quality assurance in engineering education is described as an example of the latter. The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) monitors, evaluates and certifies the quality of engineering and engineering technology education. ABET’s accreditation role, policy guidelines, procedures and criteria are outlined. With increasing global mobility, the importance of establishing the equivalence of engineering programmes is emphasized, and international developments in the mutual recognition of engineering credentials are also reviewed.
