ABSTRACT

The exudative oedematous lesions reduce in frequency and severity and lichenification becomes predominant. Thickened excoriated skin, with increased skin markings, affects the antecubital and popliteal fessae, and the sides of the neck, wrists and ankles. Exudative lesions may occur on the hands and discoid patches of eczema are occasionally present on the limbs. In Afro-Caribbean, Asian and Chinese children, persistence of an extensor pattern with marked lichenification may be seen. Older children who have severe atopic eczema are frequently asthenic and may have difficulties at school.
