ABSTRACT

EAA has been described in acute, subacute and chronic forms. In the classic form of acute EAA, symptoms become apparent 6-8 hours after antigenic exposure and include breathlessness, cough, fever, malaise, myalgia and headache. If there is no further antigenic exposure, symptoms resolve within 48 hours but sometimes can take longer (up to a week). In cases of recurrent exposure, symptoms can become unremitting and more severe, which is sometimes described as the subacute form of the illness. The subacute form is more likely to present as an insidious onset of breathlessness and cough over a few weeks.
