expenditure it is estimated that schizophrenia

consumes about 5.4% of this amount. It is

also apparent that over 90% of these costs are

accounted for by about 50% of patients

(Prudo and Bluhm, 1987; Davies and

Drummond, 1994), in particular those with

severe drug-refractory or intolerant illnesses.
