ABSTRACT
In this chapter we will first give a general view of Helsinki, the capital of Finland, and then examine the ways in which the city has been described in Finnish literature. The main part of the chapter deals with the literary examples of Helsinki as a dwelling-place and as the central point of Finnish regionalism. The city of Helsinki is thus viewed both as a scene of individual experience and as a symbol at the societal level.
